Director of Rubicon Dance –  Kathryn Williams

Rubicon’s Director since 2014, I studied Dance at Roehampton. My career has spanned IT, Finance as well as the Third Sector and the Arts. As a postgraduate I studied Entrepreneurship. I’m a Lead Wales graduate and I’m also Wales’s first Pilot lighter. I think that access to the arts is a democratic right and this very much shapes my approach to what I do. I’m also a School Governor, childcare campaigner, advocate for the arts and committed martial artist. I live in the former mining community of the Rhondda in South Wales with my husband and teenage sons.

Choreographer & Creative Director – Jamiel Laurence

Jamiel Laurence occupies a unique position within the wider arts economy, as an artist creating work through collaborative practice, while also producing the work of other artists through entrepreneurship, bringing together his experience as a Performer, Creative Director, Venue Director, Filmmaker and Choreographer.
As an award-winning Choreographer & Filmmaker, Jamiel has now created works for several notable organizations including BBC ARTS, BBC Scotland, BBC Connected Studio, Google, OneDanceUK, 3Tone Records, The Peter Darrell Trust, Celtic Connections, Scottish Ballet, Ballet Ireland, Edinburgh Fringe 2015, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Dance School of Scotland and more. Since 2020, Jamiel has demonstrated the ability to facilitate new opportunities, founding the ongoing#FundFreelanceDance initiative, and more recently creating the unique event concept, BALLET NIGHTS. Now seeking to work with like-minded thinkers on exciting projects outing dance into new spaces, Jamiel is focused on opportunities that assist with the recovery of the arts & culture sector post-pandemic and create conditions in which artists can thrive.
In September 2021, Jamiel became the Creative Director and inaugural choreographer for the newly formed Rubicon Dance Company, based in Cardiff and borne out of the wider Rubicon Dance organisation. After selecting the founding company members, Jamiel created the company's first full-length production, "The Nutcracker" premiered December 10th, 2021, and is now planning and producing their Digital Season alongside a Triple Bill for 2022.

Rubicon Dance

Rubicon Dance is a social arts organisation that has been delivering dance to people of all ages and abilities since 1975.
We deliver dance opportunities for people and communities across Newport, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan and we have built a strong, nationally recognised reputation for our ability to reach those who are often excluded from the arts. Rubicon exists to unlock self-expression, so that people discover their potential, feel motivated and connected to the world. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to discover their own potential and nurture their individual talents. This is why we have made it our mission to challenge traditional views of what it means to dance; whether this is where we dance, who we dance with, or what artistic expression looks like.
Rubicon develops and supports the dance sector in Wales by discovering, nurturing, and curating talent wherever it may be. We provide a variety of progression routes for dancers, allowing them to explore their love for dance and thrive creatively. Be it through a GCSE, Arts Award, or performance group, we encourage individuals to become exceptional artists, collaborators, and innovators for Wales.
